Not So Happy Place

Cupid brought Reed up-to-date while Pan paced the tiny room, chiming in whenever an important detail had been omitted. Reed listened intently, occasionally tapping his fingers on the handle of his cane lying on the bed beside him.

“And right now, I’m waiting for Posey to read my message and hopefully call me.”

“That would explain your highly agitated state.” That and Cupid’s worry that his probing might have caused Posey to act carelessly. “When she does call—”

Just then, Cupid’s phone rang in his hand. He was about to answer when Reed reached his cane over the gap between the beds and jabbed the end at Cupid’s leg.

“Ouch!”

“Sorry.”

“What?” Cupid asked, staring anxiously at Posey calling . . . with his finger hovering over the screen as the seconds ticked away.

“Before you say another word to Posey, know that secrets are what drive Cupid and Psyche apart in the story.” Reed’s words sank like a rock to the bottom of Cupid’s heart. Was it already too late?

With a tight nod acknowledging Reed’s advice, he accepted the call. “Hi, Posey. Thank you for getting back to me.”

“It was very sweet of you to check on me.”

“You’d do the same for me. In fact, you already have.”

“True.”

Reed had left the bed and was busy coaxing a reluctant Pan toward the door, the two of them bickering the whole way: “Give them some privacy . . .”

“. . . just gonna have to repeat everything afterward.”

“. . . nosy Nelly.”

“. . . big bully.”

Cupid covered the phone with his hand until he heard the door click shut behind them. Only then did he resume his conversation with Posey. “How was your happy place today?”

“It was fine,” she answered flatly.

“Just fine?”

“It was good,” she said—but it wasn’t really. He could hear it in her voice.

“Did something happen? Please tell me you’re not hurt—”

“No, nothing happened. Nothing at all happened.” Posey sighed into his ear. “It’s just me being silly.”

She was keeping something from him. Reed had warned Cupid about secrets, but he hadn’t specified whose. Wouldn’t Posey’s secrets destroy them just as handily? He’d have to venture gently into the new territory of Posey’s mind. She’d had a lot more practice at hiding than Cupid.

“You know you can talk to me, Posey. Remember, that’s our deal. You’re here for me, and I’m here for you.”

The silence between them stretched for so long, Cupid worried he’d scared her back into her shell . . . but then came the confession. “I think I asked a little too much of my mountains today. A spectacular view and a good, hard ride used to be enough.”

“I’m sorry, Posey. I feel responsible for ruining your happy place.”

“You know, come to think of it, it is your fault! All this talk about love. You’ve got me seeing things that aren’t really there.”

Love? Could it be that Posey recognized love at Painted Rock yesterday?

Attempting to contain the jubilation threatening to burst out of him, Cupid took care to keep his tone steady.
